Here They Lay

The six metal lines represent six persons of color who died at the hands of the police and captured America’s attention: Oscar Grant, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, and Samuel DuBose. The length of the lines corresponds directly to their height, which ranged from 5’8” to 6’4”. The vertical placement of the lines represents the relative elevation of the locations at which they died; the height of those locations varied from approximately 10’ to 762’. The horizontal placement of the lines represents the relative dates on which they died, ranging from January 2009 to July 2015. This piece is installed in the offices of the Rosenberg Foundation, San Francisco, California.
